Panthers sign QB Kyle Trask with Haynes King hurt, waive two other players

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers made three roster moves Sunday morning.

And one of them involved a quarterback head coach Dave Canales has known for years.

The Panthers announced that they’ve signed veteran signal-caller Kyle Trask to their training camp roster. The move comes after Haynes King suffered a hamstring injury during the team’s first preseason game on Thursday night — one that has sidelined the rookie for the time being and has rendered him “week-to-week” moving forward.

Trask, 28, will now temporarily occupy the QB3 role on the team’s depth chart. The former Florida Gator will help the Panthers get through training camp and through their next three preseason games without overburdening backup Kenny Pickett and starter Bryce Young. King will remain on the active roster while he’s recovering from the injury.

Trask spent 2025 on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad. Prior to that, he spent three years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including when Canales was the offensive coordinator there in 2023. Trask also has experience with Panthers offensive coordinator (and newly minted play caller) Brad Idzik.

To make room on the Panthers’ 91-man training camp roster for Trask’s addition, the Panthers waived two other players. They waived wide receiver Malick Meiga out of Coastal Carolina with an injury designation; he finished Thursday’s preseason game with a catch for 13 yards. The team also waived/injured former Appalachian State outside linebacker Nick Hampton, who recorded one of the team’s two sacks on Thursday night.

The Panthers plan to sign outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon, a league source confirmed to The Charlotte Observer on Sunday morning. The Athletic reported the plan first. Moon played one game for the Panthers last season. Once the move becomes official, the Panthers will be at the roster limit.

The franchise hosted a tryout for Trask in July. The team opted to not sign the former second-round pick at the time — the team couldn’t afford the luxury of having four quarterbacks in camp while injury atrophied depth at other positions — but the move has now paid off.

“Kyle Trask is somebody that I love,” Canales said last month. “Had the chance to spend a year with him in Tampa, and we’re (bringing) him in to work him out, to see where he’s at physically. ... You never know what happens. But it’s good to just have guys who know the system, to be ready, to be available. And I’m just glad to be able to spend the day with Kyle.”

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound QB is entering his sixth NFL season. He’s played in seven games and has yet to notch a start, according to Pro Football Reference.

The Panthers play their second of four preseason games at 1 p.m. ET Saturday on the road against the Buffalo Bills.
