Curry magic lifts Warriors to overtime victory over Magic as win streak hits seven

SAN FRANCISCO – Steph Curry has shown a penchant for shaking off slow starts with third quarter scoring binges during the Warriors’ winning streak.
But against a short-handed Magic squad missing Paolo Banchero and Jalen Suggs, Curry did not wait until the halftime intermission to start sizzling in the Warriors’ thrilling 126-119 overtime victory over the Magic at Chase Center on Saturday night.
Curry scored 41, with 19 coming in the fourth quarter and overtime. Yaxel Lendeborg put in 23 points and Draymond Green had 13 assists. Franz Wagner led Orlando with 30 points and 11 assists.
The Warriors have now won seven in a row.
Curry made 5 of 6 shots in the first half. But he was just as dominant in the fourth quarter as he scored the Warriors’ final 12 points to help force overtime.
Backup center Charles Bassey scored the first four points of overtime with Curry on the bench, knocking down two free throws and flipping in a floater before Curry and Green re-entered with 3:48 left in overtime. The Magic took a one-point lead with two minutes left in overtime with a Tristan De Silva triple, but Curry responded by converting a finger roll through contact for an and-1 layup.
Wendell Carter Jr. missed two free throws on the next possession, and the Chase Center crowd roared as if Gabby Williams had made a triple. Carter split free throws, and Lendeborg threw down a dunk with 11 seconds remaining to ice the game.
Curry gave the Warriors a 106-103 lead with a minute remaining, but Carter answered with a triple of his own. On the next possession, Curry’s tricky handles gave him enough separation to draw free throws with 37 seconds remaining. He knocked both down. Wagner answered with a quick floater that nestled itself in the net with 34 seconds on the clock.
Curry reached 36 points on a running hook over multiple pairs of arms in traffic with 25 seconds on the clock. Wagner could only shake his head in disgust.
Jamal Cain tied the game at 108 with a put-back and sent the game to overtime. Curry gave them a four-point lead with a minute remaining on another layup.
Curry scored 14 points in the fourth quarter, but he was not alone in a back-and-forth period. Lendeborg made all four of his shots of the quarter, including an impressive sequence where he finished a layup in traffic, and then blocked Wagner in isolation. He almost won the game with a halfcourt fling at the buzzer that clanged off the back rim.
The Warriors entered Saturday as one of the NBA’s hottest teams, on a six-game winning run after beginning the season 0-3.
Despite missing multiple starters, the Magic still made a game of it in a chippy matchup. During the first half, Georges Niang wrapped up Carter on a foul, and the two parties had to be separated. Both were assessed technical fouls after a long review.
The Warriors led 57-41 at halftime, but four turnovers and a bevy of missed shots helped the Magic make a run. Orlando tied the game at 69 after Jase Richardson, son of Warriors icon Jason Richardson, buried a jumper.
Tristan De Silva provided the Magic with their first lead of the game on a 3-pointer. The Magic stretched the lead to as much as six. Niang ran off five quick points early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 85, and Lendeborg also went on a personal 5-0 run to help keep the Warriors in the lead.
The Warriors retook the lead when Curry connected with Lendeborg for a fast-break dunk with eight minutes remaining in the fourth. A wild finish ensued.
The Warriors will have a day off before ending their homestand with a game against the New Orleans on Monday.
Golden State will then embark on a road trip through the Southwestern Division.
