Curry's big night extends Warriors' winning streak to 5 despite Green's ejection

SAN FRANCISCO — Draymond Green and Dillon Brooks. The unstoppable force and the immovable object. Should they share enough minutes on the hardwood, these two titans of the technical are bound to clash. And clash, they did.
Green was ejected for the first time this year following a third-quarter brouhaha with Brooks, but the Warriors extended their winning streak to five games with a 116-113 win over the Phoenix Suns as Stephen Curry had 34 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
Green and Brooks weren’t the only ones getting chippy. Charles Bassey, who finished with a career-high 19 points and hauled in eight rebounds, got into a skirmish with the Suns’ Miles Bridges after collecting a rebound, prompting Brooks to escalate the action by shoving Bassey with both hands. Bridges was issued a technical for the infraction.
Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg had an inefficient shooting night but totaled 16 points, five rebounds and five assists. Brandin Podziemski had 20 points, while Georges Niang contributed 13 points off the bench.
The origins of the altercation between Green and Brooks unfolded two minutes into the third when the Suns’ Khaman Maluach bumped Green and dropped him to the floor. Maluach then received a pass right at the rim, prompting Green to quickly rise to his feet, wrap up Maluach as he went up for the layup, then throw him to the ground.
Brooks, an irritant in his own right, rushed to Maluach’s defense and got in Green’s face. Green grabbed the collar of Brooks’ jersey, and assistant coaches rushed to Green to separate him from the fracas.
Following a lengthy replay review — Lendeborg took a couple of warm-up shots to stay warm — Green was assessed a common foul, a technical foul for throwing Maluach down, then another technical foul for his spat with Brooks, resulting in his ejection. Brooks was also assessed a tech.
The Warriors ended the first 31-19 after making just a third of their shots (8-of-24) from the field and clanking two of their 15 attempts from beyond the arc. Golden State found a rhythm offensively in the second quarter, putting up 32 points and knocking down half their shots from the field. At the half, Phoenix held a 57-51 advantage.
Curry kept the show going following Green’s ejection and proceeded to drop 18 points in the third quarter, knocking down four three-pointers in the process. Golden State trailed 68-57 after Booker knocked down the technical free throw, but Golden State and Phoenix went into the fourth quarter tied at 93 apiece.
What’s next
The Warriors will be off on Tuesday and Wednesday before welcoming Giannis Antetokounmpo, Klay Thompson and the new-look Miami Heat to Chase Center on Thursday at 7 p.m. For the Heat, their matchup against the Warriors will come on the second night of a back-to-back.
