Magic bounce back in NBA Cup road win over Raptors
Published in Basketball
TORONTO — After falling to the Raptors by 30 points Wednesday night, Magic coach Sean Sweeney wanted his team to play with more physicality and intensity in a rematch at Toronto on Friday night.
Orlando did that and more inside Scotiabank Arena by holding on late for a 121-114 victory, opening NBA Cup action with a key victory on the road.
In what felt like a rock fight at times, the Magic’s Desmond Bane (28 points), Franz Wagner (26), Wendell Carter Jr. (20) and Anthony Black (17) combined for 91 points.
While Orlando was balanced on offense, Raptors forward Scottie Barnes recorded a new-career high with 41 points while shooting 19 for 34 from the floor.
The Raptors (3-2) went ahead 102-100 about three minutes into the fourth quarter. It was Toronto’s first lead since early in the first quarter, but the Magic didn’t fold on a night they shot 18 for 34 from 3-point range.
After a three-game, six-day road trip, the Magic (2-3) return to Kia Center for a back-to-back that starts Sunday against Boston. The Magic then host the Wizards on Monday.
Starting 5
Sweeney on Friday stuck with the same starting lineup — Jase Richardson, Bane, Black, Wagner and Carter — that opened the game Wednesday night.
Bane came out firing as he knocked down his first four 3-pointers, including three in the opening four minutes of the game. He notched 14 points in the first half while Wagner led the team with 18 at the break.
The German forward relied on his fancy footwork to drive downhill and attack the paint successfully. Those drives also allowed him to get to the free-throw line, where he shot 7 for 8 in the first half.
Meanwhile, Bane didn’t slow down from distance, tacking on two more 3-pointers in the second half. He found himself in foul trouble late, however, when he picked up his fourth foul at the 9:30 mark of the fourth quarter and his fifth less than a minute later.
Black did more than just score as he racked up six rebounds and 10 assists, the latter of which tied a career high.
Carter was efficient from the floor (6 for 11) and at the free-throw line (8 for 9) as he added seven rebounds.
Second unit
Tristan da Silva and Jamal Cain both found themselves in early trouble while picking three first-half fouls. That led Sweeney to turn to two-way forward Alex Morales, who made just his seventh NBA appearance.
Morales grabbed one rebound and didn’t attempt a shot in nine minutes.
Although Cain’s first-half time on the floor was limited, he opened 2 for 2 from 3-point range in just seven minutes before the break. He knocked down his third 3-pointer with five minutes left in the third quarter, but committed his fourth foul moments later on defense.
Similarly, da Silva hit both of his 3-point attempts and totaled eight points in 23 minutes despite picking up four fouls.
Sweeney played both Goga Bitadze and Nikola Vucevic but neither reserve center was effective on offense. Bitadze grabbed four rebounds in six minutes while Vucevic hit a 3-pointer in six minutes.
Offensive glass
After limiting Toronto to eight total offensive rebounds Wednesday night, the Magic let the Raptors grab 12 offensive boards in the first half Friday — doubling Orlando’s first-half total.
Orlando did a better job securing defensive rebounds by limiting Toronto to just three offensive rebounds in the second half.
Still, those extra opportunities gave the Raptors a slight advantage in second-chance scoring (20-14).
Difference from distance
The Magic held the Raptors to 3-for-13 shooting from 3-point range in the first half.
That changed dramatically when Toronto shot 5 for 8 from distance in the third quarter.
Raptors guard Immanuel Quickley led the charge from distance, shooting 4 for 9 to help Toronto finish 11 for 27. Led by Bane’s accuracy, the Magic shot 53% from 3-point range.
