Minus Banchero and Suggs, Magic fall flat against Raptors
Published in Basketball
TORONTO — The Magic gave up 103 points through three quarters and couldn’t keep up with the Raptors inside Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday night.
Playing without Paolo Banchero (right low-grade high ankle sprain) and Jalen Suggs (mild right knee bone bruise), Orlando had a difficult time taking care of the ball (20 turnovers), cleaning up the glass and converting from beyond the arc as they fell, 129-99.
The Raptors, without star forward Kawhi Leonard due to swelling in his left knee, overpowered the Magic thanks to a combined 69 points from Scottie Barnes (28), RJ Barrett (25) and Immanuel Quickley (16).
The Magic trailed by seven points, 32-25, after the first quarter, and were outscored 97-74 the rest of the game.
The Magic (1-3) remain in Toronto for a Friday night rematch against the Raptors (3-1) that’ll count towards group play for the NBA Cup, the league’s in-season tournament.
Starting 5
Second-year guard Jase Richardson made his second NBA start as he opened alongside Desmond Bane, Anthony Black, Franz Wagner and Wendell Carter Jr.
Richardson played four minutes in the first half after he picked up three early fouls. He didn’t return to the game until the start of the third quarter, a quarter in which he knocked down two 3-pointers and scored all 10 of his points.
In his second game of the season, Black scored six of Orlando’s first 12 points. But he missed all three of his 3-point attempts, turned the ball over four times and scored just two more points in 22 minutes.
Similarly, Wagner had a tough time taking care of the ball, committing seven turnovers in the first half. The German forward notched 15 points on 4-of-11 shooting, four rebounds and five assists.
Bane converted an early four-point play when he was fouled on a first-quarter 3-pointer, and he ended 2 for 8 from distance for 13 points in 34 minutes.
Carter fought hard for offensive rebounds and racked up 10 total boards, but only took four shots from the floor for three points in 26 minutes.
Da Silva’s shooting
A lone bright spot for the Magic off the bench was Tristan da Silva.
The third-year forward knocked down 4 of 5 shots from 3-point range and recorded 20 points in 31 minutes.
It was just the ninth time in his NBA career crossing the 20-plus-point scoring mark.
Difference from distance
The Raptors didn’t necessarily hoist a ton of 3-pointers on Wednesday night, but they were more accurate than the Magic.
Powered by Barrett (3 for 5 from 3-point range) and Quickley (4 for 7), the Raptors shot 43% (15 for 35) from beyond the arc.
Meanwhile, five Magic players who attempted at least one 3-point shot failed to convert from distance. Orlando ended 10 for 35 from 3-point range (29%). The Magic took the same amount of 3-pointers as the Raptors but missed five more attempts.
