BOSTON — With a nor’easter barreling down on New England, the Red Sox are getting out of dodge.

The Red Sox announced Friday that their regular season finale against the Chicago Cubs, originally scheduled for Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at Fenway Park, is being relocated to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The team’s final game will now be played on Sunday at 3:05 p.m.

The threat posed by this weekend’s storm had already caused significant upheaval to the Red Sox-Cubs series. Sunday’s originally scheduled finale was moved up to Friday afternoon as part of a doubleheader, and Friday night’s game was moved up twice, first to 6:05 p.m. and then to 5:35 p.m. to fit the game in before the rain and wind ramps up later in the evening.

The Red Sox and Cubs will fly to St. Petersburg following the second game of Friday’s doubleheader.

According to the Red Sox, tickets purchased directly from the Red Sox will be automatically refunded back to the original payment. The ticket will hold no cash value and refunds will be completed within seven days. Those interested in buying tickets to Sunday’s game at Tropicana Field can do so from MLB.com.

While MLB games being relocated due to incoming weather is rare, it’s not unprecedented.

In 2017 two series were moved from their original venues due to hurricanes. In late August a series between the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros was relocated to Tropicana Field due to Hurricane Harvey, and a few weeks later a Rays-Yankees series was moved to Citi Field in New York ahead of Hurricane Irma.

Other instances included a September 2008 series between the Cubs and Astros to Milwaukee due to Hurricane Ike, an April 2007 series between the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Indians to Milwaukee because of snow in Ohio, and a Sept. 2004 series between the Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins to Chicago due to Hurricane Ivan.
