Mariners swept by Blue Jays as Max Scherzer tosses one-hitter

TORONTO — When the obituary for the Mariners’ 2026 season is finally written, a story already past the outlining stages, their tepid performance in Toronto Sunday will be noted as a key moment in their season-long failures.
Desperately needing a victory to avoid being swept and stay relevant in the AL West race, the Mariners were held to one hit by the Blue Jays in a 7-0 loss.
Max Scherzer’s continuous, but ultimately unsuccessful search for a return to his better days seemed to make him a pitching Ponce De Leon.
But for at least one outing in what is certainly a Hall of Fame career, Scherzer found the mythical fountain of youth in facing a Mariners’ lineup that had mustered a total of four runs in the first two games of the series.
From his first inning of work in which he struck out Randy Arozarena, Dom Canzone and Julio Rodríguez, Scherzer channeled the “Mad Max” persona of a decade ago, when he was one of the most feared big-game pitchers in baseball.
His only hit allowed was a double by Cal Raleigh in the fourth inning. The ball bounced off the top of the fence and back into the field.
The Mariners mustered only one baserunner after Raleigh’s double the rest of the way.
