Giants blown out by Tigers following Wall of Fame ceremony

SAN FRANCISCO — Throughout Saturday, the scoreboard at Oracle Park displayed highlights from the respective careers of Buster Posey, Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt, Pablo Sandoval and Joe Panik, the group inducted into the Giants’ Wall of Fame in a pregame ceremony. The highlights on the scoreboard were worth watching more than the lowlights on the field.

For all the applause before first pitch, there wasn’t much to celebrate during the Giants’ 8-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Saturday evening. Landen Roupp struggled with command. The offense mustered two hits. The defense wasn’t clean. The Tigers scored six runs in the seventh. Unlike the montages played in between innings, this was a game worth wiping from memory.

Roupp was on his way to one of his better starts of the season but was ultimately undone, once again, by walks. He allowed just one run over 5 1/3 innings but issued five free passes, including three in the top of the sixth. Roupp’s lone run scored when Keaton Winn, his replacement, issued a walk with the bases loaded, giving the Tigers a lead they’d never lose.

For Roupp, this is his ninth outing this year he’s walked at least three batters, as well as his fourth outing he’s walked at least five batters.

While the Giants didn’t commit any errors, it’s not accurate to say they played anything close to flawless defense. Left fielder Eddys Leonard overran a routine fly ball, while center fielder Drew Gilbert lost a ball in the sun that resulted in a two-run double.

San Francisco was only trailing 1-0 going into the seventh inning, but Detroit blew the game wide open by plating six runs to establish a commanding 7-0 lead. Rookie right-hander Trent Harris, making his debut, allowed three of those runs and retired just one batter.

The Tigers’ Jackson Jobe made his first appearance in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June, allowing just one hit over five scoreless innings.
