Roupp's rough outing sets tone for SF Giants' loss to Brewers

SAN FRANCISCO — The pregame news dump on Tuesday afternoon was one of the most brutal in recent memory.

Utilityman Casey Schmitt was diagnosed with a torn meniscus and could miss the remainder of the season. Rookie right-hander Trevor McDonald will definitively miss the remainder of this season and then some, electing to undergo UCL reconstruction surgery that could cost him the entire 2027 season. Most bizarre of all, Harrison Bader got into a scooter accident over the weekend and did further damage to the foot he was rehabbing.

The nine innings the Giants played that followed the furious flurry of medical updates didn’t do much to lift the vibes. San Francisco lost to the Milwaukee Brewers, 8-2, on Tuesday night at Oracle Park, a game that was as one-sided as the score suggests.

One of the night’s few bright spots was rookie Bryce Eldridge, who turned on an inside fastball and sent a two-run shot into the right-field arcade for his 11th home run of the season. Aside from Eldridge, the night was generally dour. Boo birds rained down at various points, and the stands started to thin out in the later innings.

Landen Roupp entered play having allowed just three earned runs over his last three starts but couldn’t find the strike zone against Milwaukee, allowing four runs over 3 2/3 innings with three walks. Roupp threw 37 pitches in the fourth inning before being lifted for JT Brubaker, who allowed three runs over three innings of long relief.

What made the night especially frustrating for San Francisco (45-62) is that Milwaukee didn’t power its way to those eight runs. Of their 13 hits, 10 of them were singles. The Brewers also took advantage of mistakes. Two Brewers — Garrett Mitchell and Andrew Vaughn — were hit by pitches, and the batters that followed those plunkings each drove in a run.

Opposite Roupp was the Brewers’ rookie right-hander Logan Henderson, who struck out seven and generated 15 whiffs over 5 2/3 scoreless innings.
