The newest member of the Red Sox will be sidelined for at least the near future.

According to a source, recently acquired infielder Curtis Mead is being placed on the 10-day injured list after being hit by a pitch on the left wrist in his team debut.

To fill Mead’s spot on the active roster, the Red Sox are calling up infielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A.

Multiple reports, including from Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram and MLB.com’s Ian Browne, say Mead suffered a broken wrist on the play. Alex Speier of The Boston Globe was first to report news that Mead was headed to the IL.

Mead was hit by a pitch during his second plate appearance in a Red Sox uniform, taking a 95-mph fastball from Athletics starting pitcher Jack Perkins in the top of the fourth inning. Mead remained in the game and took his position at second base in the bottom of the fourth, but when the Red Sox came back out on defense in the fifth Mead was subbed out for Anthony Seigler.

Initial X-rays on Mead’s wrist came back negative and interim manager Chad Tracy said following the game they thought the club may have dodged a bullet, but the club also wanted to see how Mead felt in the morning before deciding how to proceed.

Losing Mead so soon after his arrival is a huge blow for the Red Sox, who were counting on Mead to help give the club’s offense a boost down the stretch. The 25-year-old infielder was acquired over the weekend in a trade with the Washington Nationals in exchange for rookie left-hander Connelly Early, who is also on the injured list with left elbow inflammation.

Romy Gonzalez will start for the Red Sox at second base on Tuesday night. The Red Sox clubhouse is scheduled to open to the media at 6:40 p.m. ET and Tracy is expected to speak around 7:30.
