DETROIT — Jackson Holliday is heating up.

Making his first start at shortstop this season with Gunnar Henderson in the designated hitter spot, Holliday went 4 for 5 with a double and two runs scored to lead the Baltimore Orioles to an 8-5 win over the Detroit Tigers on Monday. Holliday’s performance tied his career high for hits in a game, a feat he accomplished three times previously and most recently on June 8.

Between those two four-hit games, Holliday has hit .421 with three doubles, 10 walks and a 1.031 OPS — his highest OPS for any 15-game stretch this season. The 2022 No. 1 overall pick has still struggled defensively at times — a ground ball off his glove went for an infield single — and he was thrown out trying to steal after his last hit, but Holliday’s surge at the plate has been a welcome sight after his start was slowed by a broken hamate bone.

It was a strong day for many of the hitters around him as well. Coby Mayo went 2 for 4 with three RBIs; both his hits came against right-handed pitchers, including a two-run home run in the fifth. Leody Taveras also crushed a 412-foot homer in the same frame, and Tyler O’Neill took Tigers left-hander Tyler Holton deep with a pinch-hit solo shot.

The Orioles chased Detroit starter Keider Montero in the fifth, and the Tigers did the same to Kyle Bradish, who tied his season high with five runs allowed on 10 hits and a walk with four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings.

However, his bullpen picked him up as Yennier Cano, Grant Wolfram, Andrew Kittredge and Rico Garcia combined for 4 1/3 scoreless frames.

— Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle (foot) and starting pitcher Chris Bassitt (back) both begin rehabilitation assignments with Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday, manager Craig Albernaz announced Monday. Mountcastle has been out since April 11 with a broken bone in his foot, and Bassitt underwent facet bone spur removal surgery on his back in late June.

— Baltimore traded outfielder Johnathan Rodríguez to the Pittsburgh Pirates in a cash deal Monday, four days after designating the 26-year-old for assignment. Rodríguez appeared in seven games for the Orioles and went 2 for 11 (.182) at the plate. They originally acquired him in late March from the Guardians in a trade that sent pitching prospect Carter Rustad (3.15 ERA in Double-A as a reliever) to Cleveland.

— The signing deadline for MLB draft picks passed Monday at 5 p.m. without the Orioles coming to terms with their two remaining unsigned selections: 19th-round outfielder Victor Salazar and 20th-round right-hander Ross Davis, both from the high school ranks. The club had already announced deals for its other 18 picks.
