Giants conclude rocky first half with win over Rockies

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants will enter the All-Star break with some much-needed good vibes, defeating the Colorado Rockies 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Oracle Park to take three of four from their division rival.
Rookie Trevor McDonald rebounded from a disastrous start against the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing just one run while matching his season-high seven innings on just 73 pitches.
McDonald’s afternoon got off to a shaky start when he allowed an inside-the-park home run to the Rockies’ Jake McCarthy on his second pitch of the game.
McCarthy pulled an 0-1 fastball from McDonald into Triples Alley and never stopped running, taking advantage of when right fielder Jung Hoo Lee fumbled the ball. The play was initially ruled a triple with an error, but was shortly overturned to an inside-the-park home run.
The Giants entered the bottom of the eighth locked in a 1-1 tie, but scored a pair of runs by creating havoc on the bases with runners at the corners.
Grant McCray, pinch-running for Bryce Eldridge, took off for second and forced a throw from catcher Hunter Goodman. Goodman’s throw sailed into center field, and Rafael Devers, the runner on third, waltzed home to give San Francisco a one-run lead. Willy Adames provided additional insurance with a broken-bat single to drive in McCray, who advanced to third on Goodman’s error.
The Giants had evened the score in the fourth when Eldridge earned a walk against Colorado starter Michael Lorenzen, Adames singled to left to move Eldridge to second, then Drew Gilbert followed with his own single to score Eldridge.
Foley finishes rehab assignment
Before the game, the Giants reinstated right-handed reliever Jason Foley from the 60-day injured list and optioned right-handed reliever Spencer Bivens to Triple-A Sacramento.
Foley signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Giants in the offseason and has spent this year working his way back from right shoulder surgery, which he underwent in May 2025.
The 30-year-old Foley, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2024, has a 3.16 ERA over 199 2/3 innings with 150 strikeouts. The right-hander has experience in high-leverage situations, having recorded 35 saves in 42 opportunities.
Davidson to be promoted to Triple-A
Outfielder Bo Davidson, the Giants’ No. 4 prospect per Baseball America, will be promoted from Double-A Richmond to Triple-A Sacramento following the All-Star break, a source told this news organization.
With outfielder Dakota Jordan, the team’s No. 7 prospect, being promoted from High-A Eugene to Richmond, this will allow both Davidson and Jordan to continue playing center field.
Davidson, 24, hit .277/.340/.521 with 19 home runs and 14 steals over 73 games for Richmond. The undrafted outfielder was named the Eastern League Player of the Month for June after hitting .309 with 11 home runs, the most in a calendar month in franchise history.
Worth noting
— Rookie catcher Daniel Susac (lower back strain) is expected to return when the Giants begin the second half against the Mariners in Seattle, per manager Tony Vitello.
— Third baseman Matt Chapman is not expected to be back for the team’s first series against Seattle.
