Latest Jake Bennett gem powers Red Sox to series victory over White Sox

The Boston Red Sox keep on rolling, though Wednesday night’s series-clinching 5-0 victory over the White Sox in Chicago came at a cost.

Taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning cost them two of their hottest hitters, Anthony Seigler and Willson Contreras, who suffered a right trap contusion and left foot contusion, respectively, during the latter’s at-bat. Both players then departed the game within two minutes of each other as the bottom of the inning began.

But with Jake Bennett on the mound, the Red Sox were unstoppable. Fresh off six shutout innings against the Rockies in Colorado on June 22, 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball against the New York Yankees on June 27 and a career-high 7 2/3 innings in Anaheim on Friday, the rookie blanked the White Sox for seven innings in Chicago.

Bennett allowed four hits, issued one walk and struck out four in his latest display of meticulousness: 81 pitches, 53 for strikes.

Wednesday marked the 16th quality start by the Red Sox rotation in their last 19 games. It was also the rotation’s 15th start of at least six scoreless innings this year, the most by a Red Sox team within their first 90 games since 2002; they hadn’t so much as reached double digits by this point in a season since 2018.

White Sox starter Davis Martin lasted just four innings. Boston batters tagged him for five earned runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out two, throwing 84 pitches (56 for strikes).

Chicago’s side was a veritable “Who’s Who” of former Red Sox top prospects. Their starting nine featured Boston’s 2022 fourth-round pick Chase Meidroth at second base, 2023 first-rounder Kyle Teel as catcher and 2024 first-rounder Braden Montgomery in right field.

The Red Sox selected left-hander Chris Murphy in the sixth round of the 2019 draft. Unlike the above players, Murphy made his major league debut with the Red Sox (June, 2023). He had a strong 2025 campaign in Boston, posting a 3.12 ERA over 23 appearances before being dealt to Chicago in November for minor league catcher Ronny Hernandez.

Murphy worked around Wilyer Abreu’s leadoff double to pitch a scoreless fifth inning, with strikeouts for Gonzalez and Jarren Duran.

The Red Sox have won five in a row, 10 of their last 12, and just handed the White Sox their first series loss at home since April.
