Mariners' offense continues to be anemic in loss to Guardians

CLEVELAND — During this two-week stretch of anemic production and for much of the season, scoring three runs in a game has somehow been enough for the Seattle Mariners to win more games than they’ve lost.

They came into Saturday night having posted a 12-6 record in games where they have scored three runs.

It’s a testament to their pitching — both starters and relievers — to have that sort of success.

Only six teams in MLB have winning records when scoring exactly three runs in a game.

Five of those wins for Seattle have come during this awful stretch where they’ve failed to score more than three runs for the better part of two weeks.

On a night when they needed four runs to not lose and keep playing, the Mariners couldn’t scale that seemingly impossible mountain, losing 4-3 to the Cleveland Guardians.

For most of the game, it looked like the Mariners might get held scoreless. Down 4-0 in the eighth inning, Randy Arozarena clubbed a three-run homer to deep left-center to give Seattle hope.

But Cleveland closer Cade Smith was able to work a scoreless ninth despite allowing a single to Julio Rodriguez and hitting Randy Arozarena with a pitch.

Working without a scheduled piggyback, Logan Gilbert pitched seven innings, giving up four runs in the outing to take the loss.
