2-RBI days from Henry Davis, Brandon Lowe lead the Pirates to a series win against the Mariners

PITTSBURGH — The Pirates continually walked a tightrope. The Seattle Mariners never let them fall.
The Pirates beat the Mariners 5-1 on Thursday afternoon at PNC Park on two homers — a solo shot from Brandon Lowe and Henry Davis’ two-run blast in the third inning. The Mariners left 11 runners on base, going 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.
The Mariners left the bases loaded in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings and left two on in the fifth.
Bubba Chandler had a fourth consecutive solid start, allowing one run on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked three, struck out four and retired nine in a row after Cal Raleigh’s one-out double in the first.
The Mariners’ first real threat came in the fourth. With one out, Julio Rodriguez and Josh Naylor both singled, and after a Randy Arozarena flyout, Luke Raley walked to load the bases. But Jake Mangum made a sliding catch on a Cole Young liner to leave them stranded.
Seattle scored its first run in the fifth, when Chandler walked the first two batters, Nos. 8 and 9 in the Mariners’ lineup. Leadoff man JP Crawford singled in Mitch Garver from second, but Chandler struck out Raleigh and got Rodriguez to ground into an inning-ending double play.
In the sixth, Chandler was pulled after 75 pitches and an infield single from Arozarena. Evan Sisk allowed a single, a fielder’s choice and a hit batter to load the bases, then Cole Emerson grounded into an inning-ending fielder’s choice.
Stress continued in the seventh. Sisk was pulled after walking Raleigh, then Yohan Ramirez faced three batters and allowed a fielder’s choice and two walks. Mason Montgomery came in to face pinch hitter Rob Refsnyder with the bases loaded and got him to softly fly out.
The Pirates have won seven consecutive home interleague series, dating back to July 21-23 last year.
It was over when...
... the Pirates added two huge insurance runs in the eighth. Davis doubled, stole third when the third baseman crashed to field an intended bunt, then scored on Lowe’s single. Ryan O’Hearn added an RBI single with two outs, scoring Bryan Reynolds.
Gregory Soto pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the series win.
On the mound
Chandler’s velocity ticked up under pressure. After allowing two singles in the fourth, his fastball sat between 100 and 101 mph, peaking at 101.4 mph against Raley. However, his command did falter as his velocity rose.
Despite the scoreline, Thursday still wasn’t a stress-free day for the Pirates ‘pen. Ramirez and Sisk both looked shaky, though Montgomery threw an impressive, 10-pitch scoreless eighth with two strikeouts.
At the plate
The Pirates were largely baffled by Mariners starter Bryce Miller, who struck out 11 in 5 2/3 innings. But of the four hits he allowed, two were homers.
Davis was just 2 for 17 in the month of June entering Thursday. He went 2 for 3 with a double and a homer, scoring twice.
Reynolds went 1 for 3, extending his on-base streak to a career-high 30 games and his hitting streak to 15 games.
Bucs bites
— Former Pirates manager Derek Shelton will be part of John Schneider’s coaching staff at the All-Star Game in Philadelphia in July. Shelton was invited by the Blue Jays’ skipper, who will manage the American League team.
— With the win, the Pirates have won consecutive games for just the second time this month.
