Tigers-Guardians rainout Sunday forces another tweak to rotation plans

CLEVELAND — The finale of the Detroit Tigers-Cleveland Guardians series at Progressive Field was postponed Sunday because of a thick line of storms that rolled through the state.

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sept. 4.

Sunday was supposed to be the return of Casey Mize to the Tigers' rotation. But he will have to wait three more days. He is now scheduled to start the finale in Houston on Wednesday.

Troy Melton and Framber Valdez will pitch the first two games of the series.

Part of the rationale for moving Mize to the back end of the Astros series is to keep Melton and Valdez on regular rest. Mize, having been on the IL since May 27, is restarting his five-day cycle.

Keider Montero, who was initially expected to start the finale, now will be an option to pitch out of the bullpen in the series.

The Tigers were prepared to make a move to facilitate Mize's return. That decision now also will be delayed, which means they will carry an extra hitter (Hao-Yu Lee) Monday and Tuesday.

The Astros, by the way, are planning to activate Wayne State product Hunter Brown off the IL to pitch Tuesday. He's been out since April with a shoulder injury.
