Red Sox' Trevor Story undergoes surgery, will miss significant time

BOSTON — Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story underwent a successful hernia repair, the club announced Friday afternoon.
Dr. William Meyers performed the procedure at the The Vincera Institute in Philadelphia.
Meyers’ was the third opinion Story received before he chose the surgical route. The veteran shortstop said last week said the route would keep him out six to ten weeks.
It marks Story’s third surgery in five seasons since he signed a six-year, $140 million contract with the Red Sox in March 2022. He played 163 total games over the first three seasons, though only 43 in 2023 after offseason internal brace surgery on his throwing elbow, and 26 in 2024 following surgery to repair a left-shoulder subluxation he suffered in Anaheim, Calif., during the season-opening road trip.
Story completed a comeback season last year, hitting .263 with a .741 OPS in 157 games – his most since 2018 – but struggled to begin the ongoing campaign. He hit .206 with a .547 OPS, 34 hits, seven doubles, three home runs, eight walks and 57 strikeouts in 41 games before he landed on the 10-day injured list on May 16.
On the whole the Red Sox have been one of the best defensive teams in baseball this year. They lead the majors with 45 Defensive Runs Saved, at least 10 DRS better than the No. 2 Los Angeles Dodgers, and lead the American League in both Fielding Run Value and Outs Above Average.
Back-to-back Gold Glove right-fielder Wilyer Abreu leads all American League defenders with 12 DRS. Caleb Durbin’s eight DR are tied for the most by a third baseman. 2025 Gold Glove center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela is one of 20 MLB players who entered Friday with at least six DRS.
Story is the only qualified player on the roster with negative DRS (minus-1). He’s in the 15th MLB Percentile in FRV (minus-2) and 10th percentile in OAA (minus-3).
In Story’s absence rookie middle infielder Marcelo Mayer will likely finally move over to the position for which the Red Sox drafted him fourth overall in the 2021 draft; he worked out at shortstop during this week’s road trip to Atlanta and Kansas City, Mo.
Other shortstop options on the active roster include Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Andruw Monasterio. The Red Sox are unlikely to move Rafaela back to the infield with fellow outfielder Roman Anthony on the IL due to a ligament injury in his hand.
