Orioles hit 'too many' homers, run out of fireworks in 10-3 win over Red Sox

BALTIMORE — There were no more fireworks by the sixth inning.

Call it what it was Friday night at Camden Yards: An offensive barrage so loud that the video board announced that there would be no more pyrotechnics, thanks to the rockets flying off the Baltimore Orioles’ bats.

Baltimore launched six home runs, piled up 20 hits and rolled to a 10-3 win over the Boston Red Sox, climbing back to .500 and notching its first American League East victory of the season. The damage came early, and it was more than enough.

The Orioles (13-13) didn’t wait.

In their first home game in more than a week, Gunnar Henderson led off with a 109.1 mph homer. Adley Rutschman followed with a two-run shot to right-center. Dylan Beavers added a solo blast.

Three swings. Four runs.

The Orioles had scored just five first-inning runs through 25 games entering Friday. They nearly matched that total in minutes.

It was a welcome sight for the trio.

Henderson entered the game in a lull, going 1 for 13 with no RBIs in Baltimore’s series win at Kansas City. His leadoff homer was the 13th of his career.

Rutschman, who had played in just 11 games this season after a stint on the injured list with ankle inflammation, continued his return in a big way. He homered twice — once in the first, again in the fourth — for his fourth career multi-homer game. He had gone deep Tuesday in Kansas City but sat out Wednesday’s rubber match after a night game. His last multi-homer effort came on March 27, 2025, in Toronto. Beavers hadn’t homered since April 1.

The power didn’t stop.

Boston’s (9-17) Wilyer Abreu answered with a solo shot in the second off right-hander Brandon Young. Rutschman countered in the bottom half, grounding out to bring Henderson home from third.

An inning later, the Orioles went deep again.

Samuel Basallo, serving as designated hitter while Rutschman caught, launched a solo homer to right-center field, stretching the lead to 6-1 by the end of the third.

Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello entered 4-2 against Baltimore with a 3.26 ERA in 38 2/3 innings. He didn’t last long, getting knocked out after 3 1/3 innings while allowing eight earned runs on 13 hits.

Boston left-hander Jovani Moran didn’t slow the momentum. Coby Mayo added another homer in the fifth — his third in as many games and the first time he has gone deep in three straight. It was Baltimore’s final firework.

Rutschman added another RBI in the seventh off Ryan Watson, slicing a single through left field to send home Henderson from second. The catcher finished 3 for 5 from the plate with six RBIs, his first performance with that many since June 2024.

For as much as Boston’s pitching struggled, Young steadied things on the mound.

The 27-year-old allowed just two more runs after Abreu’s homer — on a Ceddanne Rafaela groundout in the fifth and a Marcelo Mayer RBI double in the sixth.

Young pitched 5 2/3 innings, striking out five while allowing one walk and seven hits. The Orioles turned to the right-hander after placing Dean Kremer on the 15-day injured list with a right quad strain Thursday, opening a spot in the rotation. Young leaned on a mix that kept Boston off balance, generating a 31% whiff rate with his splitter against left-handers and a 36% whiff rate with his slider against right-handers.

Young has pushed his way into the conversation early this season, allowing two runs across 21 2/3 innings between Triple-A Norfolk and the majors entering Friday. He made the most of a spot start earlier this month, pitching five scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox.

Baltimore is now 2-0 this season with Young on the mound, and he’s making a case for a longer-term role in the rotation.

Yennier Cano secured the final out of the sixth for Young, while Andrew Kittredge added a scoreless frame of relief in the seventh. Cameron Foster pitched the final two frames, striking out one and working out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the ninth to secure the Orioles’ first division win of the season.
