Devers stays hot, Eldridge, Hill drive in two apiece as Giants beat Pirates in 10 innings

PITTSBURGH — A night after a gutting walk-off loss, the Giants responded by beating the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-4 in 10 innings, on Wednesday night.
San Francisco scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning off former Giants closer Camilo Doval on an opposite-field, go-ahead RBI double by Bryce Eldridge and Turner Hill’s sacrifice fly. Eldridge and Hill both finished the night with two RBIs.
Current Giants closer Dylan Smith, who entered play having allowed four walk-off losses, allowed the automatic runner to score on a leadoff single by Nick Gonzales in the 10th before securing his fourth save.
Red-hot Rafael Devers hit his third home run in his last three games, his 32nd homer of the season, while starter Landen Roupp allowed one run and two hits over five innings.
For Devers, this marks the third time this season he’s hit three homers in a three-game span. With 22 games remaining, Devers (83 RBIs) has a shot at becoming the first Giant to drive in 100 runs in a single season since Buster Posey in 2012.
Devers gave the Giants (58-82) a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a solo homer off Bubba Chandler, a lead they held until the Pirates scored the equalizer in the fourth when Roupp walked in a run.
San Francisco re-established its advantage in the top of the fifth, taking a 3-1 lead on Bryce Eldridge’s sacrifice fly and Turner Hill’s RBI single. This lead, too, would evaporate.
Spencer Horwitz brought Pittsburgh within one run in the seventh when he drove in a run on a groundout, then Oneil Cruz tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with an infield single to bring home Bryan Reynolds.
Reynolds nearly delivered the walk-off base hit in the bottom of the ninth inning when he smoked a line drive to left field, but Turner Hill was positioned well and made the sliding catch to send the game to extras.

Blade Tidwell (0-1, 4.54 ERA) will take the mound on Thursday afternoon at PNC Park as the Giants attempt to take the series.
