Bo Bichette didn’t get the moment he wanted at Citi Field in front of New York Mets fans over the weekend, but his two RBI on Monday night in St. Louis gave the fans watching on TV something to cheer about.

One day after getting booed by the Mets faithful, Bichette drove in two of the Mets’ four runs in a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Clay Holmes threw 5 2/3 innings, Devin Williams recorded his first save in a Mets uniform and the Mets limited the Cards to only five hits throughout the entire game, quieting the bats that made a lot of noise in their season-opening series.

Through four games this season, things are going relatively well for the Mets (3-1).

Bichette came into the game 1 for 14 with eight strikeouts. He was understanding of the Mets fans who let him know they weren’t happy with his season-opening slump. Bichette wasn’t happy either, saying he understood why fans were booing him Sunday afternoon, and wondered why they hadn’t done it sooner.

When he signed with the Mets after spending the entirety of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays, he understood he would be facing a much different fanbase. Toronto might be considered by some to be the New York City of Canada, but Canada might be friendlier than even the friendliest city in the United States. It’s a tough place to play if you’re a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs, but the Jays are typically afforded far more grace than their hockey-playing counterparts across the street.

Bichette felt ready for New York. His response to his slump showed that he is built for New York.

He put the Mets on the board in the first inning, driving in Francisco Lindor from third after the leadoff man reached on a triple. The Cards (3-1) responded in the bottom of the first, tying the game at 1-1. Bichette broke the tie in the fifth inning.

With runners on the corners and two outs, Bichette lined a single to right, and Carson Benge scored easily.

The Mets took two more runs off of right-hander Kyle Leahy in the sixth to chase him from the game. Brett Baty singled to start the inning, and Jared Young sent him home with a double to right. St. Louis went to the bullpen for right-hander Matt Svanson, who got two quick outs before getting into a jam.

Catcher Pedro Pages challenged a ball 4 call to Francisco Alvarez, and lost. Alvarez walked to put two on, and Svanson hit Lindor with a pitch to load the bases for Juan Soto, who walked on four pitches to put the Mets up 4-1.

Bichette lined out to right field to end the inning, leaving them loaded. Still, his performance was a step toward showing Mets fans the type of hitter he really is. He got into better counts and made good pitch decisions.

Leahy (0-1) threw five innings, pitching into the sixth, with the Mets taking four earned off of him on eight hits and two walks. He struck out only one hitter.

Holmes went 5 2/3, leaving the game after Nolan Gorman hit a solo home run in the sixth. The Mets then went to right-hander Tobias Myers for the next 1 1/3. Left-hander Brooks Raley and Williams went the rest of the way, with the closer needing only 12 pitches to convert the save (one).
