(UPI) National Piercing Day, celebrated annually on May 16, was started by a website in 2007 to celebrate body piercings of all types.

The holiday was founded in 2007 by GoofyAuctions.com, a now-defunct website that highlighted unusual eBay auctions, as a means of celebrating ear, face and body piercings.

The holiday gained popularity through shares on MySpace, and is widely celebrated today on Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram, where the hashtag #NationalPiercingDay trends annually.

Other holidays and observances for May 16 include Biographer's Day, Day of Vesak, International Pickle Day, Love a Tree Day, National Coquilles St. Jacques Day, National Mimosa Day, National Sea Monkey Day, Nickel Day, Supply Chain Professional Day and Wear Purple for Peace Day.
