Firefighters hoist cow out of manure trough

(UPI) Firefighters responded to a barn at the University of New Hampshire to rescue a cow that fell into a manure trough.
The Durham Fire Department said crews responded about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday after a caller reported a cow stuck in the waste trough.
"An animal had fallen down between one of the grates in the trough that carries animal waste manure out of the barn," Durham Fire Chief Dave Emanuel told WMUR-TV.
The bovine, a 2-year-old, 1,200-pound Holstein cow named Ruby, fell into the hole while trying to pull her hoof out of the grate.
"We had to get her turned around, physically backed up and headed out so we could hoist her out of the hole," Emanuel said. We had multiple people in the manure trough, which was 4 1/2 to 5 feet deep in waders to get underneath and strap the animal so we could hoist her out.
A university veterinarian said Ruby did not appear to be seriously injured.
The New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station thanked firefighters in a Facebook post.
"Thanks Durham NH Fire Department for helping our gal Ruby out of a 'stinky situation' this morning at the UNH Fairchild Dairy Teaching and Research Center," the post said. We know we can always count on you. And we know what we're putting in your stocking this year: soap.
