Minnesota officer rescues large highway-crossing turtle

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (UPI) -- A Minnesota police officer helped rescue a nearly 40-pound turtle that was spotted attempting to cross a local highway.

Eden Prairie Police Department shared a photo of officer Spencer Barrie, who responded to reports of a large turtle attempting to cross highway 212.

Another officer originally saw the two-foot long, 30-40 pound turtle crossing the highway and called Barrie, who joined the police force last month, for assistance.

Barrie arrived at the scene and carefully picked up the turtle and loaded it into a truck in order to relocate it.

"When Spencer Barrie started working as an EPPD Community Service Officer last month, he probably anticipated helping officers with traffic direction, finding stray dogs and answering questions from residents at the EPPD's front desk," the department wrote. He probably did not think he would need to rescue a huge turtle from the middle of Hwy. 212.
