Carl Craig on Movement, his new documentary and aging like Leonard Cohen

He recently watched the finished film for the first time, and he said it was "quite exciting" to watch the story of his life unfold in front of his eyes.

There's a line in the movie where he succinctly explains his life and his artistry. "I'm a specialist at what I do," Craig says. "If I don't do it, what am I a specialist in?"

"That was basically me saying I don't know how to be anything but Carl Craig," he explains. "Carl Craig takes chances. Carl Craig doesn't just lay down and not push the boundaries. I'm a specialist in everything that I've done over these years that have made me what I am. I don't know how to be John Brown, I don't know how to be David Lee Roth. I know how to be Carl Craig."

That idea of Carl Craig is expanding as he gets older, he admits. Looking toward the future, he's drawing inspiration from an unlikely source.

"I saw Leonard Cohen in Chicago ..., and I can't really say that I'm a Leonard Cohen fan, but what I like about Leonard Cohen is the way he matured into how he made his music and performed," Craig says, of the legendary songwriter, poet and performer.

"I really like that, so I'm looking at that concept, and if I can walk my style into that being the next step of my career, that would be great," he says. "To have these soundscapes I make with this rich dialogue that goes along with it, which is poetic and entertaining and spiritual as well? That I can see walking toward, maturing into the business."
