Video: Grouper swallows shark off fishing rod in single gulp

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. (UPI) -- A video uploaded to YouTube on Tuesday shows a group of fisherman off the coast of Bonita Springs, Fla. trying to real in a 4-foot shark when a Goliath grouper, commonly known by the fairly insensitive moniker "jewfish," jumps out of the water and helps itself to a meal in one single bite.

Rather than chewing, groupers' mouths and gills create a powerful sucking system, allowing it to swallow prey in a single, pressurized, gulp.

Goliath groupers can reach up to 800 pounds and measure over eight feet long. They are a protected species and must be thrown back if caught in U.S. waters.
