Celebrity Travel: Go Away With Nathan Adrian

By Jae-Ha Kim, Tribune Content Agency on

The son of a nuclear engineer and a nurse, swimming champion Nathan Adrian grew up in the Seattle area. At five, he began swimming to keep up with his older siblings. Rio marks the third Olympic Games for the 27-year-old champ. Having already won four Olympic medals (three gold and a silver), he is looking forward to helping the United States win a few more. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, the 6-foot-6 athlete also models for Speedo swimwear and is Tommy Hilfiger's menswear ambassador. Adrian will stay in touch with fans during the Olympics via Twitter (https://twitter.com/Nathangadrian) and Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/nathangadrian/).

Q. Have you visited Brazil prior to these Games?

A. I have not. I am most excited to see the venues for the Olympics.

Q. Will you be disappointed if you don't get to spend extra days sightseeing?

A. I didn't get to see much of London during the 2012 Olympics, but there was still a little time for exploring and I really enjoyed that. We are so lucky to have the unique perspective of being a participant in the Olympics. I find that to be the most exciting part of the travel for me.

Q. You mentioned in the past that you wanted to get to Thailand and the Philippines. Have you been able to visit yet?

A. I have not! Since we last talked, I have basically been training and cutting out any unnecessary travel. Hopefully, in the next year or so I will be able to go. I do have plans, however, to compete in Tahiti in the fall, so that should be exciting!

Q. So far, which has been your favorite Olympics?

A. I think that is similar to asking a parent who their favorite child was. I love both of my Olympics for different reasons. I was just a kid when I competed in Beijing, whereas in London I was more mature and swam a lot more.

Q. You're an adventurous eater. Are you looking forward to enjoying Brazilian cuisine?
