My Pet World: Summit allows pet lovers to discuss bringing pets, people closer together

By Steve Dale, Tribune Content Agency on

Buffington is a supporter of environmental enrichment to support natural species specific behaviors, such as toys that dispense food. In fact, given a choice, many animals actually choose to work for their food compared to chowing down from a food bowl.

"Still too much change isn't good either, particularly for cats. It's a matter of finding that right balance," Buffington added.

But how do you do that? Ragen McGowan, senior scientist at Neslte Purina says, "Rewire your brain to think like your pets." For example, she pointed out that the way which cats see the world that the colors green, violet and blue may be more calming than say a bright red. Another example is fluorescent lighting, particularly flickering light bulbs. The sight and sound of flickering bulbs might actually be disturbing to some animals.

Veterinary behaviorist Dr. Ilana Reisner pointed out what most dog bites have in common. "They most often happen to children, and most aggressive dogs are actually afraid. And what's most important is that many bites can be prevented."

A second keynote was delivered by former TV news reporter Carole Radziwill of Bravo's "Real Housewives of New York" She talked about how she grew up with pets, and how she has at least some regret that when her late husband, Anthony, became ill, there was no animal there to help him or her through his illness.

After her husband passed on, Radziwill got two dogs, Margaret and Baby.

Radziwill discussed Margaret, a boxer, and said: "It took six to eight months to perfectly bond, until then I truly considered giving her away to the butcher's son -- that would have been a very good life."

The way which we share our lives with pets today is very good for both pets and the people they live with -- life is better with pets.
