My Pet World: A cure remains elusive for cats with FIP

By Steve Dale, Tribune Content Agency on

Bourgeois says to watch for the following flu symptoms:

1. Coughing

2. Discharge from the nose and/or eyes

3. Not wanting to exercise

4. Not wanting to eat

Although it's hard for dog owners to detect, a fever is another symptom. More profoundly affected dogs may have difficulty breathing and sometimes even develop pneumonia; that's when the canine influenza virus can potentially become life threatening.

Q: My sister's mixed-breed dog is afraid of the George Foreman grill we recently purchased. We feel so bad watching as her little body shakes so badly. What should we do? -- D.G., Hartford, CT

A: Perhaps it's the sound of the grill or something about the smell that bothers your dog. Every time you take out the grill, give the dog a treat. Then, once the sight of the grill is no longer an issue, take the dog to another room and offer her treats while someone turns on the grill. Over time, gradually bring your dog closer to the grill.
