Auto review: Goodnight Kitty: Jaguar's last gasoline-powered sports car
Published in Automotive News
Under its long sexy bonnet — aka hood to us Yanks — resides a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8, which provides the ample seamless flow of power expected from a proper sports car. Forget the turbochargers and hybrid assists; this cat roars with an effortless pace that makes the world seem right. It pops. It snarls. It growls. Its cylindrical symphony is not the result of noise created by a microchip, but the true result of internal combustion. Matched with sharp steering and a firm, snubbed-down ride, the F-Type makes fast work of your favorite freeway or curvy country road. Its performance is sharp. And even though you may find others sharper or faster, none are a Jaguar. And look again. None are wrapped in such simple, sensuous, sinuous sheet metal that render it among the most beautiful sports cars ever built.
Yes, it comes with the requisite electronic touchscreen, a 10-inch display that runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. And there’s an available wireless phone charger should you require one.
But the true performance here is what will win your heart, one that comes from eight cylinders, a tank full of petrol and a shape that still makes you weak in the knees.
And while Jaguar may have an electric future, we sure are going to miss what came before it.
