1 in 12 admit they have driven while drunk

EAGAN, Minn. (UPI) -- The number of U.S. drunken-driving fatalities has fallen, but 1 in 12 adults admit they may have driven while drunk within the last year, a survey indicates.

A survey by legal Web site FindLaw.com says 7 percent of U.S. adults say they have driven within the last 12 months even though they thought they may have been over the legal blood alcohol limit for drinking and driving in their state.

The survey also says:

-- Men were almost three times more likely than women to say they have driven when they thought they were above the legal limit.

-- Younger drivers ages 18 to 34 were more than twice as likely as older drivers to admit the same behavior.

-- Of those drivers who admitted driving while possibly over the legal limit,12 percent say they have been arrested for driving while intoxicated sometime in their life.

The survey was conducted using a demographically balanced telephone survey of 1,000 American adults and has a margin of error of plus/minus 3 percentage points.

In 2007, an estimated 12,998 people died in accidents where a driver had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher -- a 3.7 percent drop from the 13,491 fatalities in 2006, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters said last week.

Drunk Drivers

It makes me sick how many people drive while drunk. My son was hit Christmas Eve by a drunk driver, driving on his side of the highway. He is lucky to be alive!! We have drummed into our sons heads to NEVER EVER DRIVE DRUNK!! If it is 3A.M. we will come and get you! I may not be happy but I would rather go get them over planning a funeral! If you have to drink to the point you are drunk buy a bottle and sit at home and drink it and please stay at home! We always told our sons that there are cemeteries across the country filled with innoncent by standers! I have discussed this with friends and have concluded if we we're to drive drunk we could be killing our own children who are drivers themselves. Please, do everyone a hugh favor and DON'T DRIVE DRUNK!!

To ArcaMax;

I can not emphasise enough how much this subject bothers me.I feel tired and worn out arguing the point that 'Driving while under the influence' should be against the law.

I will try one more time "DUI should not be against the law"!!

After twenty-five years or more from the PC
MADD or SADD or the general feeling of the nation
[including other countries] there are still 12K deaths attributed to drunk drivers in the USA.

It is apparent that 'JAIL and Scorn' is not working. It will never work. I personnally am a victim of the system, just to make the record straight.

There are other solutions. At the fore front is to undo all the harm done by the MADD's and
SADD's have accomplished.
