Girl, 17, links MSG to stunted brains

CALGARY, Alberta (UPI) -- The popular food additive MSG causes stunted brain cell development, a 17-year-old Canadian student working at the University of Calgary said.

Working under supervision during her high school summer break, Michelle Ah-Seng is one of 22 students who began research programs, the Canwest News Service reported.

Ah-Seng directly dosed brain cells from snails with a concentration of monosodium glutamate equal to what a person might eat in a typical serving. She said it became apparent brain cells didn't fully develop when exposed to MSG.

Her supervisor, neuroscientist Naweed Syed with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the university's faculty of medicine, said the girl has made an "exciting" discovery.

"This is the first unequivocal evidence, to my knowledge, that MSG has direct effect on neuronal ability," Syed said. "The stuff she has done (in six weeks), I would call it equivalent to a master's degree."

Syed said the next step for the high school student is to get the results published in a scientific journal, which will require validation of her findings.

Ah-Seng said she plans to continue doing that evenings and weekends while in Grade 12, the report said.

Jolynn's symptoms

I read with great interest that Jolynn has had issues with MSG giving her headaches, but not that she is consuming no glutamate, she is fine. I wrote "no glutamate", because it means the exact same thing as "no MSG". Monosodium Glutamate is simply sodium and glutamate - that's all (and not much sodium to boot). Glutamate is the most comon amino acid - found is every food protein, as well as being in a free form in a great many foods, including tomatoes, cheese, legumes, poultry and red meat, and a host of others. Even Mother's Milk is loaded with glutamate.

The glutamate is these foods is *identical* to the glutamate in MSG.

I wonder - is Jolynn's diet truly glutamate free?? I think not.

I agree - MSG is "supposedly linked" to a kitchen sink of diseases. Supposedly, because there is no research that has linked MSG to any disease at all. I guess that, since glutamate is such an important amino acid that life couldn't exist without it, the presence of MSG and life itself allows diseases to occur.

I have my day job, Jolynn, and I am quite happy with it, SERIOUSLY, thank you.

What?

Did we read the same story. The one listed above says that MSG stunts brain cell development. How did you get that MSG is good for the brain from that?

I think this is a very interesting discovery. This child has a very bright future ahead of her.
