White to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

Black had a very equal game until the White pawn on d4 became too much of a treat to resist. White was lying in wait for the unfortunate capture and responded with a move that cause Black to resign! What move did White find?

Solution:

The game, Sudakova-Melamed, St. Petersburg, 1998, arrived at the diagrammed position by: 1.e4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5 3.exd5 Nxd5 4.Nxd5 Qxd5 5.d4 Nc6 6.Nf3 Bg4 7.Be2 0–0–0 8.c3 e5 9.0–0 exd4 10.Nxd4 Bxe2 11.Qxe2 Nxd4 12.cxd4 Qxd4 (See Diagram) 13.Bg5 Black Resigned as 13… Bd6 [13...Qd3 14.Rad1 Qxe2 (14...Qxd1 15.Rxd1 Rxd1+ 16.Qxd1) 15.Rxd8#] 14.Bxd8 Rxd8 15.Rfe1 and White is a clear exchange ahead.
