Editor's Note: We apologize for any technical difficulties you may experience with getting the puzzle images to display properly. This is a site-wide problem and we are working hard to fix it. Stay tuned! There are quite a few ways to attack a castled position. We last week looked at how to key in on the g7 square. There are other squares to take advantage of. Take a look at this position. There are two “best” ways to go here of the more than two available. See if you can find them both.

Solution:

Although 1.Nxg7 will work eventually, there are two lines that I hoped you could work out. Both involve breaking up the castled position. It’s amazing how much damage knights can do! There are a. 1.Nf6+ gxf6 2.Nxh7 fxe5 3.Bg5 Nf4 4.Bxf4 f5 5.Bxe5 Nc6 6.Qh5 Nxe5 7.dxe5 Rf7 8.Qg6+ Rg7 9.Nf6+ Kf8 10.Qh6 Kf7 11.Be2 Qf8 12..Bh5+ Ke7 13.Nxd5+ exd5 14.Qd6+ Kd8 15.Qxf8+ and it’s over. It’s interesting to see how, although Black refused to take one knight offer, that knight came back to bite him with yet another sacrifice. There is also b. 1.Nxh7 Kxh7 2.Nf6+ gxf6 3.Qh5+ Kg7 4.Qh6+ Kg8 5.Bxg6 fxg6 6.Qxg6+ Kh8 7.Re3 and again a decisive rook lift makes defending against mate impossible.
