White to Play

This next three-mover in our series is composed by Dobrusky, this time as a solo performer. It’s a bit tougher than the last one.

Solution:

This solution took my breath away. There are so many variations, and yet the queen, rook and knight cooperate beautifully in every scenario. How this man actually came up with this idea is a mystery to me. 1.Rh4 Ke4 [1...Kxd4 2.Nxd5+ Kxd5 a) 2...Kd3 3.Qd1#; b) 2...Ke5 3.Qe4# (3.Rh5#) ; 3.Rh5#; 1...Kd2 2.Qe2+ Kc1 (2...Kc3 3.Nxd5#) 3.Rh1#; 1...Kf2 2.Qe2+ Kg1 (2...Kg3 3.Rg4#) 3.Qg2#] Mb<2.Qg3 Kxd4 [2...Kf5 3.Qg6#] 3.Ne6#
