WESTBROOK, Maine (UPI) -- A Maine police department is warning residents to be on the lookout for a large snake after a large shed skin was found by a local citizen.

The Westbrook Police Department posted a photo of the snake skin to Facebook, saying it was discovered Saturday by a resident along the Presumpscot River, near Riverbank Park.

"Westbrook Police Officers responded, photographed, collected, and tagged the skin which will be examined in attempts to determine what type of snake shed it and what risks this type of snake poses to public safety," the Facebook post said.

"Until the type of snake is determined and we can assess the safety risk, we caution people who recreate along the Presumpscot River to remain alert, maintain a safe distance from any wildlife, and report any sightings of the snake to the Westbrook Police Department," the post said.

City police officers reported seeing a 10-foot snake in June. The snake, dubbed "Wessie" and the Presumpscot Python, was spotted eating a large mammal, believed to be a beaver, in Riverbank Park before swimming across the river and disappearing into the foliage on the other side.
