Herd of deer shooed away from downtown Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (UPI) -- A small herd of deer found their way onto the streets of downtown Winnipeg on Monday afternoon before being sent away by local authorities.
The herd of six to 12 deer were seen roaming about several downtown areas, including the University of Winnipeg campus, at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday before four were captured by emergency crews and conservation officers.
Manitoba Conservation told CTV that six of the deer were seen at Colony Street near Broadway, when two broke off from the group and police blocked off traffic in the area to safely guide the deer toward the Assiniboine River.
"What we did is we just kept people away, and kept the deer calm, and we wanted to get a route to get them down to the river where I assume they may have come from," Manitoba Conservation district supervisor Joe Johannesson said.
Johannesson added that one of thee deer appeared to have suffered a broken leg, but was still well enough to run with the rest of the herd.
"One of them did have a badly injured back leg, but it was very mobile," he said. There are a lot of deer with injured legs like that.
