Black to Play
Published in Chess Puzzles
At the first really strong post-war tournament in 1946, one of the strongest players ever—Smyslov-- found himself in this position as Black and played what move?
Solution:
Smyslov incorrectly played 1...b2 because he figured that after 2.Rxb2 Rh2+ would win the rook; however, after 3.Kf3 Rxb2 is stalemate! The winning move would be a king move to e4 or e5.
