How to Pick the Best Life Jacket For Your Dog

Leanne Trine
Dogs who spend a lot of time around water, like a pond or beach, are often fitted with a life jacket made especially for dogs. Using a onet on your dog ensures his safety when in the water. Dog life jackets are available in a number of sizes ranging from XXS to XXL. Small dogs, weighing between 7 and 15 pounds are well fitted to the XS jacket. Breeds like the Bichon, Pekingese and toy poodles commonly take this size.

The XXS life jacket is appropriate for smaller breeds like the Chihuahua and Yorkshire Terriers while 15 to 20 pound larger breeds such as Russel Terriers commonly take the S size. The larger the breed, the larger the size jacket, much like people.

All of the sizes are outfitted with a quick grab handle, enabling the owner to life the dog out of the water in case of emergency. Neoprene dog jackets are not recommended for any size breed as the neoprene fabric traps body heat and can result in overheating, chafing and rash. Today's preserver jackets for dogs are constructed of breathable materials which allow for fast draining and drying.

Even though dogs love the water and can swim well, dog life jackets are necessary for safety. Even the best of swimmers can experience fatigue and sudden muscle cramping while in the water. Dogs who fatigue faster such as the older, ill or overweight animals benefit from dog life jackets which protect them if they tire. Keeping the animal's head above water when it is fatigued is important. The dog life jacket will support a tired canine in much the same way life jackets for humans work.

Dog life preservers are made of durable, breathable fabric that helps to keep him afloat. It is important to acclimate your dog to the water as early in life as possible. You dog will be less fearful when around water. He will have a more enjoyable experience and will be more apt to jump in on his own the next time. It will take a while for your dog to become used to the life jacket. Give him some time to wear it before he goes in the water.

Dog life jackets are available in a wide range of colors, styles and sizes at internet sites and retail stores. Measure your dog starting at the base of the neck and ending at the base of his tail for the most accurate sizing and most comfortable fit.
