Poodle Abilities
The scope of the article was so narrow - I have to embellish it a bit. While other breeds have specific functions which they excel at - the poodle is a jack of all trades - maybe not a master of all .... but certainly able to put in a commendable performance. Poodles herd, track, race in the iditirod, sniff truffles, drugs and cancers, they are excellent watch dogs and are used at times in police and shitzhund work as well. They are hunting retreivers - they are comedians, loyal and loving companions and they never really have that "doggy smell" - not to mention that lovely little to non-shedding hair coat. You can bury your face in a poodle's neck and not come away with hair stuck to your face. Intelligence - off the hook. Athletic - you bet. The prissy haircut, while extreme in the show ring was actually one of utility used to protect the head, heart and lungs, kidneys and joints to these dogs when they were being used in frigid water. The rest of the body was shaved to facilitate quick drying. Don't be fooled - they are not frou frou, useless animals - they are regal, gorgeous and spirited in the show ring. Agility, obedience, service, anything another dog can do - the poodle can do. Not all dog breeds can make that same claim!!
