Q&A: Depth of Raised Beds

Question: I am putting in raised beds this year for vegetables, flowers, and herbs. How deep should the raised beds be?

Answer: Annual plants typically have root systems that reach about 12 to 18 inches deep. If your raised beds will be shallower than that, it's a good idea to till, or at least loosen, the soil underneath the raised bed to a depth of one foot. This encourages plants to form deep roots and helps provide good drainage.

Questions Questions Questions

After reading this regarding the depth of raised beds, I wonder if the raised bed can be covered with wood at the bottom like a completed box with opened top, not touching soil at all, because I feel the soil on the ground may be contaminated with paint chemicals , and need to cover it with plastic lining. Is it okay to have raised beds to be lifted up by using brick or concrete blocks? How depth should it be for any vegetable plants' roots to grow? Any suggestions? Thanks for fast help...
