U.S. markets mixed Thursday afternoon

NEW YORK (UPI) -- U.S. stock markets were mixed Thursday in early afternoon trading after the Labor Department said 62,000 U.S. jobs were lost in June.

The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.5 percent.

The dollar gained strength against the euro, in spite of the European Central Bank raising its key lending rates to 4.25 percent to combat inflation in the Eurozone.

The Dow Jones industrial average made modest gains, up 66.27 or 0.59 percent to 11,281.78. The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 1.26 or 0.1 percent to 1,262.78. The Nasdaq composite index fell 05.24 or 0.23 percent to 2,246.22.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell 4/32 to yield 3.97 percent.

The dollar rose. The euro traded at $1.5696 from Wednesday's $1.588, while the dollar traded at 106.71 yen from Wednesday's 105.99 yen.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei index lost 20.97 points to 13,265.40, off 0.16 percent.

In London, the FTSE 100 index gained 51.70 to 5,478, up 0.95 percent.
