Initial jobless claims rose in week

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- First-time claims for U.S. unemployment insurance increased during the week ending June 28, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday.

The department said the 404,000 initial claims on the week was an increase of 16,000 from the previous week's 388,000 initial claims.

The four-week average increased by 11,250 to 390,500, the report said.

The U.S. unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.5 percent.

State-by-state statistics, lagging a week behind national figures, show the biggest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 21 were reported by New Jersey with 6,998 additional claims, California with 5,055 and Iowa with 3,085.

The biggest decreases for the week were reported by Pennsylvania with a decline of 3,455 claims, Ohio, declining by 1,700, and Illinois with 1,446 fewer claims.
