U.S. service jobs declined in May
Automatic Data Processing Inc. said service-related jobs fell by 3,000, the first drop in 67 months, while jobs unrelated to farming declined by 79,000 during the month.
Goods-producing jobs dropped by 76,000 with manufacturing jobs falling by 44,000, the report said.
Large businesses -- those with more than 500 workers -- lost 51,000 jobs. Medium-size companies -- between 50 and 499 workers -- lost 35,000 jobs, both sharp increases from the previous month.
Small companies with under 50 workers gained 7,000 jobs during the month, far fewer than the 61,000 jobs added April to May, the report said.
Two job sectors, residential construction and finance jobs related to home sales, experienced "no lessening of the recent strain on employment in these industries" during the month, the report said.
Construction employment lost 34,000 positions May to June, while financial jobs declined by 3,000, the report said.
The monthly report is compiled by ADP with Macroeconomic Advisers LLC of St. Louis.
