NEW YORK — The US Open is set to feature a star-powered blast from the past, with Venus and Serena Williams competing together in the women’s doubles tournament at Flushing Meadows for the first time in four years.

The Williams sisters are receiving a wild-card entry for the event, which begins Sept. 3, the Open announced Wednesday.

This will be the 10th time the Williamses have teamed up in doubles at the Open. They won the event in 1999 and 2009 and are 27-7 in doubles matches there overall.

Wednesday’s announcement continues an unexpected comeback for Serena, who famously “evolved” away from professional tennis after the 2022 Open and did not compete for more than three years.

The 44-year-old Serena made her return in June at the HSBC Championships in London, where she won a doubles match with Victoria Mboko, who had to withdraw after that due to a knee injury.

Serena — a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion — then participated in the singles tournament at Wimbledon, losing in the first round.

Serena suffered a knee injury at Wimbledon, which — her manager told ESPN’s Patrick McEnroe — has not quite healed to the point where she can compete in the singles tournament at Flushing Meadows. The final wild card went to another American in Sofia Kenin.

But Serena has been healthy enough to compete in doubles this month. She and Venus, 46, played together at the Cincinnati Open, where they lost in the first round.

Then on Tuesday, Serena played well in the mixed doubles tournament — her first US Open competition in any capacity since 2022 — where she and 23-year-old Carlos Alcaraz won a match before being eliminated in the quarterfinals.

“I never expected to be back on this court, so it’s just a really cool moment,” Williams, a six-time singles champion at the Open, said Tuesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium. “I never thought this would happen.”

Overall, Venus and Serena have won 22 doubles titles together, including 14 at Grand Slam tournaments. Their most recent major championship came at Wimbledon in 2016.

Last year, Venus competed with Leylah Fernandez, 23, in the doubles tournament at the Open and advanced to the quarterfinals.

Wild card for Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka is set to compete at the US Open after all.

After Wawrinka did not originally receive a wild-card invitation to the tournament in Queens, the Open announced that the soon-to-retire veteran would replace Patrick Kypson, who withdrew due to an injury.

“I’m incredibly excited to accept the wild card for the 2026 US Open and look forward to competing in front of the fans in New York once again,” Wawrinka, 41, said Wednesday.

This is the final season for Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion who won the US Open in 2016 with a victory over Novak Djokovic in the final.

The Open’s initial omission of the Swiss-born Wawrinka was met with criticism, though Wawrinka released a classy statement Tuesday thanking New York for the memories.

“This city challenged me. It pushed me. It brought something out of me that few places ever could,” Wawrinka wrote on social media.

“Winning the US Open, in the city that never sleeps, will forever be one of the greatest moments of my life.”
