Avalanche rediscover success away from home in 5-2 win over Blackhawks

CHICAGO — Nazem Kadri and Jaden Schwartz each scored a pair of goals and the Colorado Avalanche snapped a three-game losing streak away from Ball Arena with a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks Monday night at United Center.
T.J. Hughes got his first multi-point game with two assists, and Mackenzie Blackwood made 21 saves for the Avs, who have won three straight.
Kadri gave the Avs their first lead of the night with a power-play goal at 13:38 of the second period. Colorado’s first four attempts with the extra man were fruitless, but the Avs made the fifth count. Cale Makar sent a wrist shot to the net from the top of the offensive zone. Both Kadri and Hughes were there near the edge of the crease trying to tip it, and the former got credit for his fourth of the season.
Schwartz added his second of the night with 10.6 seconds left in the middle period. Sam Malinski’s shot came from a few feet closer to the net but also at the top of the zone, and Schwartz deflected it through Chicago goalie Spencer Knight for his sixth of the year.
The first seven minutes of this game looked very much like the previous three road losses. Wyatt Kaiser and Roman Kantserov scored to give Chicago a 2-0 lead.
Makar deflected Kaiser’s shot between the hash marks. It trickled away from him and toward the Avalanche net. Makar made multiple swipes at the bouncing puck to try and stop its forward momentum, but it slowly found its way across the goal line at 57 seconds of the opening period before Blackwood could figure out where it had gone after the initial shot.
That one was fluky, but the second one was deserved. Kantserov bothered Nazem Kadri’s attempt to pass the puck from the left point to Makar, which allowed Connor Bedard to pounce and start a 2-on-1 the other way. Kantserov buried Bedard’s setup at 7:05 of the first, and it felt like, “Here they go again.”
Colorado thought it was back within a goal at 13:22. Martin Necas deflected a Devon Toews shot past Knight, but the Hawks successfully challenged for goalie interference. Avs captain Gabe Landeskog was at the top of the crease, appeared to be outside the blue paint and any contact with Knight certainly looked like it was initiated by the Chicago defenseman next to Landeskog. Knight was also moving right-to-left and the puck was going into the part of the net he was moving away from.
The Avs’ response to that bit of officiating-driven adversity was impressive. Colorado scored on back-to-back shifts shortly after to tie the game.
Kadri dove into the crease to poke the puck past Knight, who made the initial stop on a Landeskog shot from a weird angle but didn’t know where it was at 15:23 — 2:01 after the Necas goal was disallowed.
Schwartz made it a 2-2 game 26 seconds later. Hughes had the puck behind the net and found Schwartz for a one-timer in the left circle.
Toews added an empty-net goal from the left circle in his own zone with 2:22 remaining.
