Daniil Tarasov superb in net, but Reds Wings can't capitalize in shootout loss to Canadiens
Published in Hockey
What a night for goaltending on Saturday between the Detroit Red Wings and Montreal Canadiens.
Daniil Tarasov, in his first start as a Wing, and Montreal's Jacob Fowler both dominated. But in the end, Fowler made one more save as the Canadiens defeated the Red Wings, 1-0, after six shootout rounds.
Montreal's Zach Bolduc was the lone player from either side to score in the shootout, fitting in this game.
Tarasov was brilliant in his debut, a major reason the Wings were able to secure one point for the standings (1-3-1).
Montreal had three goals called back in this game. The last one, an apparent game winner by Alex Texier in overtime, was erased when video confirmed the Canadiens were offside on the goal.
Here is a recap of the game:
— First period: Montreal appeared to score in the first minute when Cole Caufield lifted a shot that disappeared under Tarasov. The Bell Centre crowd, more than anybody, quickly cheered the goal. But the Wings challenged the goal after seeing video of it, and video replay confirmed the puck never crossed the goal line. The Wings had two consecutive power plays, including a 27-second two-man advantage, midway in the period but couldn't take advantage.
— Second period: Another apparent Montreal goal that was taken off the scoreboard. Bolduc beat Tarasov in the slot, but Montreal's Jake Evans was called for interfering with Tarasov in the blue paint. Both teams had two power plays in the period but were held without a goal. Montreal had the better scoring chances, with the best one a clean one-timer by Juraj Slafkovsky in the slot that Tarasov denied. Fowler's best save? Stopping Alex DeBrincat in close near the end of the period.
— Third period: It was Fowler who was tested, making a save on Andrew Copp driving in alone and stopping DeBrincat near the hashmarks. The Wings killed a late Montreal power play to send the game into overtime.
— Tarasov first start: Tarasov replaced John Gibson late in the second period during Friday's loss against Seattle, making his Wings debut. Saturday was Tarasov's first start with the Wings, and he was their best player. Tarasov shook off the Caufield no-goal in the opening minute and settled into an impressive start.
— Larkin love: Montreal isn't on Dylan Larkin's list of preferred teams to be traded to, but Canadiens fans did everything they could to change that. Bell Centre fans began a "We want Larkin" chant early in the first period in an effort to convince Larkin to reconsider. But in the shootout, there were no cheers, just booing, as Larkin failed to score and secure a Wings victory.
— 11 and 7: Both teams played with 11 forwards and seven defensemen. For the Wings, Todd McLellan chose to scratch defenseman William Wallinder and forward Carter Mazur, while inserting defensemen Axel Sandin-Pellikka and Andreas Englund.
— Newsy sighting: Former Wings coach Derek Lalonde (2022-24) is now an assistant coach with the Canadiens. Lalonde was replaced by McLellan on Dec. 26, 2024. Lalonde was an assistant with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, but the Leafs fired the coaching staff after the season.
— Next: The Wings host New Jersey on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at Little Caesars Arena.
