Blues ride big second period, Jonatan Berggren's winner past Blue Jackets
Published in Hockey
ST. LOUIS — The Blues needed a night like Saturday night.
A win to snap a three-game skid. A breakout night by the top line. A game-winning goal in the third period.
The Blues got all of that in a 5-3 win over the Blue Jackets on Saturday night at Enterprise Center.
Jimmy Snuggerud scored twice and Dylan Holloway had three assists as Jake Neighbours and Jonatan Berggren also scored for the Blues. Jordan Binnington won his first game of the season by making 20 saves. Pavel Buchenvich sealed the game with an empty-netter with 42.3 seconds left.
Berggren gave the Blues a 4-3 lead about halfway through the third period, putting a loose puck in the crease into the back of the net. Berggren initially drew a tripping penalty in the neutral zone, allowing the Blues a delayed penalty. But St. Louis didn't need it, as Jet Greaves failed to cover up Mason McTavish's shot, leaving it there for Berggren.
Cole Sillinger tied the game 6:51 into the third period, sneaking a rebound through the legs of Binnington after Charlie Coyle's original shot on goal.
The Blues next play in Ottawa on Tuesday.
The party has arrived
The Blues turned the game around in the second period, scoring three straight goals to turn a deficit into a lead. The comeback was led by the top line, which had been quiet in the opening four games of the season.
Shortly after a Blues power play ended, Neighbours scored his first of the season on a rebound at the side of the net. Justin Barron's shot on goal ricocheted to the slot, where Neighbours pounced on it to give the Blues life at 6:10 of the first.
Snuggerud took over from there.
Keyed by a Binnington breakout from behind the net, Philip Broberg led the rush up ice and dropped off a pass at the crease for Snuggerud. The puck appeared to glance off Snuggerud's skates and then into the back of the net at 9:02. It was Snuggerud's first even-strength goal of the season, as he scored an empty-netter in Dallas.
Snuggerud made it three St. Louis goals in 6:22 with a shot from the right circle that fooled Jet Greaves. Robert Thomas picked up the primary assist on the goal, his first point of the young season. Holloway picked up assists on all three goals in the second period.
Ross Johnston got in his first fight as a Blue at 21 seconds of the second period, taking on fellow tough guy Mathieu Olivier of Columbus. The two were chatting before the opening puck drop of the game, but ended up dropping the gloves one period later.
Losing ground
The Blues fell behind 2-0 by the end of the first period on goals by Valeri Nichushkin (3:50 remaining) and Johnson (11.9 seconds remaining), leading to a small spattering of boos as the team exited the ice.
It was the second time this season that the Blues trailed by two goals after the first period, following last week's loss in Colorado.
