Blues point streak ends at 7 with 3-2 loss to Jets

The St. Louis Blues' point streak ended at seven games with a 3-2 loss to the Jets on Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg.
Dalibor Dvorsky and Dylan Holloway scored for the Blues as they lost in regulation for the first time since Feb. 28 against the New Jersey Devils. Jordan Binnington made 13 saves.
Haydn Fleury, Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor scored for the Jets.
Dvorsky brought the Blues within 2-1 at 5:17 in the third period with a goal on the doorstep set up by Jonatan Berggren, but the Jets reestablished a two-goal lead when Connor scored during a Blues delayed penalty at 11:53.
Connor was the extra attacker off the Winnipeg bench once Eric Comrie exited the ice, and Morgan Barron found him with a pass that sprung a breakaway. Connor went to his backhand to beat Binnington for his 31st goal of the season.
Holloway's goal with 50.7 seconds remaining gave the Blues life late in the third period, as a puck deflected off him at the side of the net, but St. Louis could not find the equalizer.
The Blues have 15 games remaining in the regular season and continue a road trip through Canada with games Wednesday in Calgary and Saturday in Vancouver.
Falling behind
For the third straight game, the Blues allowed the game's first goal, and this time, it happened on the first Jets shot of the game. Fleury scored his first goal of the season at 2:31 of the first period, marking his first NHL goal since Dec. 19, 2023, when he was a member of the Lightning.
Cole Koepke won a puck in his own zone away from a pinching Theo Lindstein on the boards, allowing the Jets to get out in transition. Fleury trailed the play and beat Binnington with a shot from the left dot.
When Scheifele scored at 7:51 of the first period, it marked the second straight game the Blues spotted their opponent a multi-goal lead. Again, this Winnipeg goal originated with a puck won along the boards.
A puck bounced over Pius Suter's stick, and Scheifele won a puck away from defenseman Cam Fowler to spring himself on a breakaway. Scheifele finished on the backhand for his 31st goal of the season.
Entering Sunday, the Blues won the previous four games in which they allowed the first goal.
Off-game
Since the Olympic break as the Blues sprinted to a 7-1-1 record, their goaltending was a major factor. Binnington and Joel Hofer combined to post a .947 save percentage and 1.66 goals-against average.
Advanced statistics estimated Binnington and Hofer combined to save 13.833 goals saved above expected, according to MoneyPuck, and 14.38 goals saved above expected according to Natural Stat Trick.
But Sunday didn't deliver the same results, beginning when the Jets scored on two of their first three shots on goal.
Overall, Binnington's 13 saves were his fewest since 13 saves on Dec. 22 in Tampa Bay.
Rookie swap
Dvorsky returned to the lineup on Sunday afternoon, one game after he was a scratch against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday night. On Friday, Blues coach Jim Montgomery said the break was to give Dvorsky a rest given the number of games he's played this season.
In order to make room for Dvorsky in the lineup, the Blues scratched fellow rookie forward Otto Stenberg. Dvorsky centered a line with Suter and Berggren, and his inclusion in the lineup was the only change for the Blues outside the goalie as Binnington started.
That meant Nathan Walker, Jonathan Drouin, Tyler Tucker and Matthew Kessel were the other scratches.
