The Wild finally swung the blockbuster trade they have long coveted, acquiring top defenseman Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks for Marco Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren and a 2026 first-round draft pick, a source confirmed Friday night.

Hughes, 26, is signed through next season to a six-year, $47.1 million contract, and he immediately upgrades the Wild blue line as a former Norris Trophy winner.

He was named the NHL’s best defenseman in 2024 after leading the position with 92 points as a power-play specialist. Through 26 games this season, Hughes has two goals and 21 assists with the last-place Canucks.

Despite being Vancouver’s captain, Hughes’ future became uncertain with the team struggling and Hughes getting closer to reaching free agency in 2026. The Florida native is in his eighth NHL season after being drafted seventh overall in 2018.

Rossi, Buium and Ohgren were all first-round picks by the Wild, with Rossi, 24, currently injured and Buium, who turned 20 on Sunday, in his rookie season.

Hughes skated for the U.S. national team development program before playing two seasons at Michigan, where he was an All-America.

He won the Calder Trophy after a dynamic 2019-20 season, when he was an All-Star and a finalist for the Norris Trophy.
