WNBA says no penalty for Aces star A'ja Wilson after fan incident in Game 2 against Fever

LAS VEGAS —A’ja Wilson will be on the court for Las Vegas’ decisive Game 3 on Thursday night against the Indiana Fever after the WNBA didn’t suspend or fine her following an incident with a fan during Game 2 of the series.
A person familiar with the ruling told the Associated Press the decision was made after officials did an in-game review and determined Wilson never left the court area while pointing and shouting at the fan. She wasn’t ejected for that reason.
Upon further review of the situation, Wilson was deemed to have remained in the court area inside the player escape lane — an area directly adjacent to the stanchion — rather than entering the stands where the fan was seated, a league source told The Athletic.
Following an in-game video review of the fourth-quarter incident, Wilson received a technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct and was determined to have no cause for ejection from the remainder of the game.
The issue stemmed from a fan appearing to point at Wilson and exchange words with her following a foul assessed to Fever guard Sophie Cunningham during Wilson’s cut toward the basket.
Wilson proceeded to approach the fan, who appeared to move toward Wilson from his second-row seat behind the basket, before being restrained by both teammates and members of the Aces’ coaching staff.
According to a section of the 2026 WNBA rulebook, the location of the altercation could have warranted a harsher punishment and was subject to ejection by the in-game officials.
“Any coach, player, or trainer who deliberately enters the spectator stands during the game will be automatically ejected,” the rulebook states, specifying that the stands begin with the first row of fans in attendance.
The rulebook also outlines that any player who is not currently active in the game “must remain in the immediate vicinity of their bench. Violators will be suspended, without pay, for a minimum of one game and fined.”
Because the interaction drew a crowd beneath the basket, Aces bench players such as Kierstan Bell and Kalani Brown crossed the court to get to Wilson.
Wilson, Bell and Brown are all currently available for Las Vegas in Game 3 between the Aces and Fever, with the winner advancing to the WNBA semifinals against either the Dallas Wings or Golden State Valkyries.
The fan involved in the incident was initially removed from the court area before being allowed to return to his seat after he was determined not to have violated the WNBA’s Fan Code of Conduct.
